Projects undertaken since Wilson Applied Consultancy was established in October 2004 include:

Ongoing projects

  • The Sustainable Biomass Partnership (SBP) - having led the development of SBP as a new global certification scheme for woody biomass, Peter continues to support the project with a focus on discrete projects. (since 2013)

  • UK Woodland Assurance Standard (UKWAS) partnership - as Executive Chairman of the UKWAS company and Chair of the Steering Group, Peter is responsible for facilitating the management and revision of the UK's certification standard for sustainable forest management (since 2004)


Completed projects

  • The Sustainable Biomass Partnership (SBP) -  development of a new global certification scheme for woody biomass. Peter took the leadership role from 2013 to 2016, as Executive Director, and developed and implemented a business plan and  facilitated the development of the SBP Framework standards and the SBP certification scheme. This new scheme provides assurance that woody biomass, mostly in the form of wood pellets, used for sustainable energy production in large thermal power plants is compliant with regulations on sustainability and legality in European Union countries. With the SBP scheme well established and moving beyond the initial development phase, Peter stood back from his leadership role but continues to support the project with a focus on discrete projects. (2013-16)

  • UK Woodland Assurance Standard (UKWAS) partnership - completion of 3-year revision process to produce a Final Draft of UKWAS Fourth Edition for submission to FSC and PEFC for their approval/endorsement (2013-16)

  • Central Point of Expertise on Timber Procurement (CPET) (managed for Defra by Efeca) - as a member of a four-person Technical Panel, assessment of international timber certification schemes for legality and sustainability  under the UK Government's Timber Procurement Policy (2015)

  • Scotland's Finest Woods Awards - as Executive Director, developing and implementing a business plan and funding streams for what was a struggling organisation and thereafter the ongoing management of the charity and co-ordinating the annual awards programme. Peter resigned with regret due to other commitments. (2009-14)

  • Forestry Commission England - Implementation of the UK Forestry Standard in England: an Independent Evaluation of the Assurance it Provides (2014) (Joint project with Sandwood Enterprise)

  • Central Point of Expertise on Timber Procurement (CPET) - drafting guidance for UK growers on meeting public procurement and other requirements (2013)

  • UK Woodland Assurance Standard (UKWAS) partnership - completion of revision of standard-setting process and other process documentation in advance of upcoming UKWAS revision (2013)

  • Forestry Commission Great Britain - report on Woodland Carbon Code - incentivising continued verification (2013)

  • Confederation of Forest Industries (Confor) - developing a charter for Confor Woodfuel Suppliers' Group (2012)

  • Forestry Commission Great Britain -  consultancy report on fulfilling the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED) requirements: options for biomass supplied from UK forests & woodlands (2012).

  • Forestry Commission Great Britain - report on Woodland Carbon Code - project risk rating and requirements for operating a pooled carbon buffer (2012)

  • UK Woodland Assurance Standard (UKWAS) partnership - completion of 3-year revision process to produce UKWAS Third Edition (2009-11)

  • Forestry Commission Great Britain - follow-up report on requirements for demonstrating the permanence of emissions reductions resulting from woodland carbon projects approved under the Woodland Carbon Code (2011)

  • Forestry Commission Great Britain - report on differentiation and commoditisation of the UK domestic forest-carbon market (2010)

  • Forestry Commission Great Britain - development of the code of good practice for forest carbon projects and mapping of alternative business models for its ongoing stewardship, verification and management (2009)

  • Forestry Commission England - peer review of new EWGS Woodland Planning Grant template (2009)

  • Central Point of Expertise on Timber Procurement (CPET) - as a member of a four-person Technical Panel, assessment of international timber certification schemes for conformance to criteria for legality and sustainability under the UK Government's Timber Procurement Policy (2008)

  • UK Woodland Assurance Standard (UKWAS) partnership - completion of small woods review process and production of amended UKWAS Second Edition to reflect better the needs of smaller owners (2007-08)

  • Forestry Commission England - facilitating development of objectives and work plan priorities for England Forest Industries Partnership (2007)

  • Institute of Chartered Foresters - interim management role as Executive Director to facilitate decision-making process on whether to merge with RICS or retain independence followed by strategic review and business plan development for an independent ICF, subsequent staff recruitment and follow-on projects (2004-07)

  • UK Woodland Assurance Standard (UKWAS) partnership - completion of 3-year revision process to produce UKWAS Second Edition (2003-06)

  • Welsh Development Agency - facilitating development of priorities for Wales Forest Business Partnership (2005)

  • Forest Industries Development Council - transition of FIDC operations to the new Confederation of Forest Industries (2004-05).
